The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) is a six week long program hosted by Northwestern University. During the beginning of the year, high school students are mentored by Northwestern medical students and medical professionals from other top universities. Activities include taking vitals, investigating different disorders/diseases, and examining real life cadavers at Northwestern’s cadaver lab. Professionals also advise students on the steps needed to become successful in the medical field

After-School Matters

After School Matters (ASM) provides thousands of year-round opportunities for students in the city of Chicago, ranging from visual arts to journalism to sports & fitness; however, medical and health-related programs typically take place during the summer for about six weeks. Notable programs include ones at Rush University and Malcolm X where students perform rudimentary tasks similar to medical professionals and take part in scientific experiments


Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro

Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro facilitate in over 30 cities across the U.S., introducing high school students to various facets of these two fields. Both camps are one week long and take place at Rush Medical College. Scholarships and financial aid are available.


Champions Network

The Champions Network at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has partnered with nine schools—Benito Juarez Community Academy, Farragut Career Academy, Nicholas Senn High School, Roberto Clemente Community Academy, UIC College Prep, Dunbar Vocational High School, Instituto Health Science Career Academy, Paul Robeson High School, TEAM Englewood Community Academy—to train students to become health advocates through lessons, interactive activities, and projects. Special priority is given to students from the schools listed above; however, freshmen, sophomores, or juniors from CPS or Noble Network of Charter School are encouraged to apply.

RESEARCH IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (RIBS)

RIBS is a four-week residential program at the University of Chicago that exposes high school students to molecular, microbiological, and cell biological techniques currently used in research laboratories. To be eligible, you must be a current sophomore or junior and have completed one year of high school biology at the start of the program. The program is very expensive but there are scholarships available that will cover up to half the cost of attendance. Applications are now open but an exact deadline is not listed; however, the program starts in June, so we expect application deadlines to be around February or March. 


SUMMER IMMERSION PROGRAM AT UCHICAGO

UChicago’s summer immersion programs run for about two weeks and recommend students to stay on campus for the duration of the program. There are a wide variety of fields to take classes in, ranging from contagion to neuroscience to general biology. Although the cost of attendance is in the thousands, there are many full scholarships for people who identify as Hispanic, African American, have a parent that is a full-time police officer or firefighter, or in general are not able to pay the full cost of attendance. 


PRITZKER SCHOOL OF MEDICINE IN RESEARCH (PSOMER)

This eight week program is open to rising seniors in high school as well as rising college freshmen. Students will perform clinical research, participate in science laboratories, and be mentored by Pritzker Medical School students and staff. In addition, there is a $3200 stipend for those who successfully complete the program. 


Medicina Academy Apprentice Program (MAAP)

Early applications open in 2020 

The Medicina Academy Apprentice Program is a pre-medical program for current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders from Hispanic/Latino origin or for those interested in medical careers that serve the Latino community. Apprentices take part in medical courses & lab sessions; higher education courses; and inter/intrapersonal activities; and career development sessions twice a month on Saturdays.


Questbridge College Prep Scholars (for juniors only)

Every year Questbridge partners with colleges from across the nation to allow high achieving students from low-income backgrounds to experience college life before the start of their senior year in high school. Multiple opportunities are offered; however, Rice, Yale, Washington University, and the University of Chicago specifically offer summer programs for those interested in the medical field. These programs, which are free for those who are admitted, are worth about $20,000


WHSP SUMMER 2020: ONCOFERTILITY SUMMER ACADEMY

Oncofertility is a new discipline that bridges oncology and reproductive medicine in order to discover and apply new fertility preservation options for young patients with fertility-threatening diseases or treatments. The Oncofertility Science Academy (OSA) is a one-week summer program offering a sequence of challenging, thematic workshops that allow high school girls to explore the fields of reproductive science, cancer biology and oncofertility. The OSA students work closely with the Woodruff Lab at Northwestern University.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer at Lurie's Hospital for 10-Week Summer Program

The 10-week Summer Program, geared toward high school students ages 16 and over and out-of-state college students, provides hands-on experience through a traditional hospital volunteer role. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with patients and families in a variety of hospitality and outpatient clinic roles throughout the hospital. Those who are selected will be asked to commit to 10 consecutive weeks of volunteering, once a week for a regularly scheduled three-hour shift, between June and August.

The Summer Intensive Program, geared toward high school students ages 16 years and over and early undergraduate students, offers a unique professional development opportunity for those interested in learning more about the healthcare field. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in a service project to benefit Lurie Children’s patients, a behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital, a career panel discussion and an interactive patient/family experience discussion.
